Finding an enchanting wall tapestry for the back wall of the Fairy Forest project was not going to be a problem. There are plenty to choose from, through a variety of retailers, in a wide selection of styles and sizes. Being a wee bit of a perfectionist, however, I knew the challenge would be to find that one backdrop that would fire up my imagination and make my inner vision come alive. I knew from past experience, a choice of that magnitude would indeed take time.
I needed to narrow down the selection pool. What size should I be looking for? The floorspace measures 8' X 4', so that provided the first requirement. The tapestry needed to be about 8' wide to be most effective. What about height?
Uh oh. We have a problem. What normally would be considered an advantage for a useable walk-in closet was going to create an obstacle for me. Lining the closet on three sides is a white wire shelf and closet rods, positioned about five and a half feet above the floor. That, I told myself, would have to come out. I grabbed the appropriate screwdriver and removed the screws from the supporting brackets.

What magic is this? The shelving didn't budge. Installed by the builder when the house was constructed, these shelves were built to last. Kudos to the builder, but definitely a challenge for me. I had not counted on a major renovation project. Now what, I asked myself whilst staring at the rather ugly structure. And then it hit me, like a flash from a fairy's wand! I would use that shelving to turn an obstacle into an advantage. Made of wire racking, any number of enhancements could easily be added to extend the forest illusion overhead. My imagination went wild.
And just like that, I had the dimensions I needed for my wall tapestry. I would take the mural from the baseboard to the wire racking, which I would then camouflage to blend in with the curtain. so, I needed to find a tapestry measuring about 8 feet wide by five and a half feet tall, a much more reasonable and achievable size versus the 8'X8' I would have required had I removed the shelving. Cheaper too!
Now the fun part, choosing the curtain that would fulfill all my expectations. I wanted it to be whimsical, but not too cartoonish. Colourful, but not garish. With no actual images of fairy folk, but perhaps some evidence of their existence. Mysterious but not spooky, so that the grandkids would feel comfortable. And then, there it was. I purchased it from AliExpress for less than $20, with free shipping. A couple of weeks later, it arrived. And it was everything I hoped it would be.
